FVLB – Migration to Azure Cloud Services

Overview

The Film and Video Labelling Body (FVLB) is a not for profit organisation that is responsible for rating films that are made available to the public.

The Labelling Body:

  • Rates unrestricted films
  • Cross-rates unrestricted films that have been rated in Australia and the UK
  • Issues labels that must be displayed on films before they are supplied to the public

FVLB has been a valued client of Kinetics Group for two decades. In this time, there have been many changes to the organisation including fluctuating staff numbers and changes to their role as the consumption of movies changed globally.

The Challenge

During 2019, FVLB was at a stage where they had to review their information services and technology. Their on-premise hardware was ageing, and legacy applications were unable to be migrated to a newer platform without a substantial re-write. As a sunset organisation, they needed to mitigate the risks in a cost-effective way while retaining the flexibility to change as and when required. Replacing hardware and investing significant funds into reworking their Line of Business application did not fit their business goal.

Kinetics consulted with FVLB to provide recommendations available solutions and the decision was made to migrate their existing systems, “as is”, to Azure.

Sharon Walling, FVLB General Manager, said “the migration process was simple, stress-free and painless. I was expecting a lot of disruption and there wasn’t any”.

Kinetics carried out careful planning and research to ensure this migration was a success and our preparation proved to be incredibly valuable in ensuring the process went well for FVLB.

Outcome

With the successful delivery of this project behind them, FVLB can now work securely from anywhere, leveraging Microsoft’s Azure and Office 365 cloud services. They have also taken advantage of the extra functionality available through SharePoint. The way they work now has changed but for the better. For example, they can do everything they need to do from home – previously there were applications such as a database were problematic working remotely. Sharon and her team can work faster and more efficiently, cashflow is manageable. Forecasting and planning is much easier as they can track expenses easily now.

This functionality was truly tested during Covid-19 Lockdowns. For FVLB, it has been business as usual during these unprecedented circumstances.
